Mahi Rawe: Great Work
New Zealand needs a more diverse and inclusive disability workforce. We are excited to promote Mahi Rawe to the disability sector.
Mahi Rawe means great work
We believe that the disability sector is a great place to work. We know it’s great to work with disabled people, ensuring they live the life they choose. There are also many benefits for people new to and currently working in the disability sector.
Meaningful mahi
Te Pou has created an exciting multimedia campaign, called Meaningful Mahi, that tells new stories about disabled people - and disability support work - to inspire a new generation of diverse young people to explore this opportunity.
This campaign showcases young people, especially Māori and Pasifika young people, and presents disability support work in a fresh, exciting way.
The campaign features three spectacular real-life ‘support work matches’, each diverse pair made up of a disabled person and someone who supports them to live a great life. These matches are profiled in the campaign through stories about their unique connections, stunning photography, and an ‘FAQ’ video section.
Mahi Rawe recruitment tips
The disability workforce struggles from a lack of diversity, in particular a lack of young people in support roles. But how can the sector attract younger people into these roles?
To find out what attracts young people to apply for jobs - and what misconnections they have about disability support work - Te Pou partnered with Curative, a creative agency committed to social change.
Together, we spoke with a range of young, culturally-diverse job seekers, to explore their understanding of disability support work. Based on their responses, we've identified five things organisations can do when recruiting to help attract young, diverse candidates for disability support work roles.
The Mahi Rawe tips are five simple ways to rethink how job advertisements are written and the thinking behind them.
This resource has been tested with a range of youth, disabled people and employers, with positive feedback received.
If you are looking to employ someone, and want to move away from the more traditional approaches, give the Mahi Rawe recruitment tips a go.
